[Interviewing] Mrs. Meyer[edit | edit source]

Welcome to the first article of Teachers Talk Cool Classes, where I introduce and share interesting facts about the inspirational and amazing teachers at Northstar. I'm Abigail Blair, and this month I'll be interviewing Mrs. April Meyer of the language arts department.

Where do you live? What hobbies do you enjoy?

I live in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. I love to read and write (which makes sense because I’m a language arts teacher). I also love to go on walks along Lake Michigan with my family.

What classes do you teach at Northstar?

I teach the Fundamentals of English, Language Arts 9 EVP, Language Arts 9 Honors, Language Arts 9 Honors EVP, and American Literature Honors.

How did you start working at Northstar Academy?

Mrs. Horneck contacted me and said, “What would you think about teaching online?” I had taught with Mrs. Horneck before in a brick-and-mortar school. When when she contacted me, I was the supervisor for my daughters in their virtual school. So I thought, Well, I’ll work through the application process and see if they are interested in me. I remember at the time having doubts, especially about how I, as a person who hadn’t really traveled much, could teach at an international virtual school. Still, I knew that God wanted me to move forward in His strength.

Do you have a mentor or person you look up to either now or in the past? Why do you look up to them?

My math teacher in high school, Mr. Bruce Frazee, had a passion for God in his classroom, and he is someone who encouraged me to give everything to serve God. I had two professors in college, Mrs. Terri Templin and Dr. Becky Thompson, who gave me a love for the English language and for expressing myself creatively.

If you could have done anything else with your life, what would it have been and why?

I had always wanted to be an author, and I still try to find time to put my pen to paper. I love that I have been able to write classes for NSA. It has been an outlet for my writing passion.

Do you have any old family keepsakes or traditions that you like and why were they kept/started?

One of my family keepsakes is a diary that my great-grandma wrote. I would visit her and see all the old diaries she had. She would write every day. When she passed away a month shy of 102- years-old, my mom asked if I wanted anything to remember Grandma Mabel by. I asked for one of her diaries. I can think of one new family tradition. This is the first year that my girls are all going to a brick-and-mortar school. So every morning on the way to school, we each pray for our day and that we can be a light for Christ.

If you could travel to any time in the past or future, where and when would it be?

I would probably travel back in time to a young America to visit with Anne Bradstreet.

What is one place you would like to visit that you have never been to and why do you want to go?

Honestly, I don’t like to travel; I’m a small-picture person, and the details of organizing and preparing to travel overwhelm me. Still, I would like to visit places around the Great Lakes that I have never been to before like the Apostle Islands and Mackinaw Island. I would like to stay in a lighthouse for a few days. I love to spend time in God’s creation.

What is your favorite movie or book genre and why?

I have a horrible time picking my absolute favorite of something, but I can say that Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books. I love that Bronte’s protagonist is a small, unattractive woman whose strength lies in her moral resolve in the face of unstable and unfair circumstances

What is the best tip you can offer to students?

Find a schedule that fits you best and stick to it!

What is your favorite word in any language and why?

Ambiance: ambiance has a warm connotation for me, and I like the way it sounds.
